Sock It To Me!

Socks used to be the forgotten accessory. Who really cares that much about socks, anyway? No one will see them (probably), so does it really matter if they're cute (or match, for that matter)?

This season, a lot of my favorite stores are selling socks. Not just any old socks, but cute socks. All kinds of patterns and colors. Knee-high and slouchy, they're perfect for a bold school girl look with a mini skirt and cardi. Or if you're feeling shy, you can let just a little sock peek out from cropped boyfriend jeans. Socks are totally versatile, and are great for cooler days when you want to stay warm but still want to look good.

As much as I dread leaving summer behind for classrooms, long treks to and from lectures and homework, I love fall. It certainly doesn't quite feel like fall here yet--it's still in the low-to-mid 90s--but I know yellow leaves and cooler temps are just around the corner. With my birthday this week, the beginning of August in just a few days and another school year starting in about a month, I've been thinking a lot lately about what I want my style to be this fall. There are so many new pieces I'm lusting after in my favorite stores, but how can I create foolproof outfits from them? I turned to Polyvore to round up a few of my current fashion obsessions and combine them to make the perfect look for any occasion.

Considering some of my favorite stores include Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister, you might assume that I have a very preppy style. However, I think I'd classify my style as a mix between girly, preppy and boho. I'm not one to wear polos with khakis, but I have a few "preppy" pieces in my closet. These twill shorts are a relatively new addition. I don't think I've ever owned khaki shorts, so it was definitely time to include some in my wardrobe. I love that they're dressier than denim, but just as versatile. Today, I decided to take them in a girly direction, pairing them with a ruffly pink tank and a pink plaid scarf. I usually wear necklaces, but I'd love to add more patterned scarfs into my life. They're a fun statement accessory. This outfit works perfectly for both casual and nicer events. The tank is from Abercrombie Kids, which may seem a little silly, but they have similar items to A&F at a fraction of the price, and often their pieces fit a little better. I'm a "straight-up-and-down" girl so kids clothes definitely suit my frame better. My only complaint about this tank is that it's a little long to wear with these shorts, but I'm petite so I'm used to things being too big. I also have longer legs than torso, so I'm on the lookout for shorter tops to wear with my short shorts.

Prep at Heart

A few of my favorite prep essentials

Hmmm...how to define my style? That's a really hard question for most fashionistas--it's difficult to narrow it down to just one word or phrase. I guess if I had to, I'd say I'm girly preppy. With a touch of boho mixed in. But lately, I've been really inspired by the preppy side of my style, so I thought I'd share a few of my favorite things.

Argyle is the classic preppy pattern. I've never owned anything argyle, or ever had a real desire to, until now. When I saw the Enmore sweater ($49.50) on the Gilly Hicks website, I fell in love. Even though it's basic navy (nothing wrong with that), it has a touch of hot pink, which I really like. I would even be willing to pay the S&H (there's no Gilly store anywhere in Colorado) because I know it would go with eveything.

Plaid, of course, is one of my favorite patterns. I own quite a few plaid shirts and skirts from Hollister but now I'm really getting into the buffalo check. The Bolsa Chica button-down ($29.50) is a bright, cheery red and would look great over a pair of dark-wash skinnies.
I also have also been interested lately in pinstripes. So I really love Hollister's Santa Margarita dress ($14.95) in pink stripe. The sweetheart neckline is cute and I just like how the color reminds me of sipping pink lemonade at a fair.
Have you noticed how socks are lately becoming more a part of an outfit rather than something you wear under shoes? I love it...and I love GH's menagerie of socks, all costing a mere $12.50. My favorites are heather grey dot, turquoise rugby and pink with a little blue bow at the top. These long socks are perfect for layering under boots or just lounging around the house in and I can't wait to get a pair of my own to play around with.
