I added in some shiny jewelry and I was all set for a day of classes!

Lace & Pearls

What's more classic and girly than lace and pearls? With the new year in full swing, I'm getting wardrobe inspiration so I can mix up my style even more this year. One of the trends I'm currently loving is lace.

Lace can be girly, sexy or even edgy, depending on how you wear it. In the past few months, I've invested in a few lace pieces myself and I love how they can dress up any look. I think I've got the girly look down, but I'd love to try lace in an edgy way.

I love statement necklaces, but every once in awhile it's good to stick with the classics. Pearls are a timeless favorite, but they don't have to be traditional! Pile on a bunch of different sized strands, mix and match with bolder necklaces and even try out different colors.

Well, here we are again, on the brink of a brand new year! I'm so excited for what 2012 has to bring. Hopefully I can get back on track with a more regular blogging schedule--school has taken that away from me, but I know that I can do better! I can't believe in just a little less than 5 months, Apparel Addiction will be 3 years old! The blog has definitely changed (for the better) since then and I hope to continue to keep sharing my style in the year to come.

Crazy for Christmas Shopping

It's no secret that I love any opportunity to shop--especially when my wallet is full and the sales are on! The post-Christmas deals are always the best, and I usually have a gift card or two to use up, which is exactly what I did on Tuesday.

First on my list was Victoria's Secret PINK. They have the best selection of bras and undies, as well as some really cute lounge wear in neon shades. But the store was crowded and I couldn't find anything that really caught my eye.

Then we went to A&F and Abercrombie Kids. Both stores were offering 40% off everything, which is a great deal. I ended up buying a pink striped pullover sweater and ruffled light grey tank at A&F and a lacy navy tank with a pinstripe bow at Abercrombie. And all for under $100!

At American Eagle, I was honestly underwhelmed. I tried on a pair of light wash destroyed jeggings, but wasn't thrilled (especially since they were $45) but then gravitated towards the jewelry. I'm almost never disappointed in the selection. I got a gold and silver necklace and a gold jeweled 'X&O' ring, and only had to spend $3, since I had a gift card.

Hollister was the final stop on our list...but we definitely didn't expect to have to wait in line outside the store for our turn to go in! I guess they wanted to prevent the shopper overload that seemed to be present in every other store, which was a good thing. With another gift card, I scored a pair of tan cord jeggings (my second pair ever--I just bought my first denim jeggings from AE last week) and a royal blue/navy buffalo plaid shirt.

Despite the craziness of the crowds (remind me to never shop 2 days after Christmas), it was well worth it to score a lot of deals and spend just a little over $100 (not counting gift cards, of course)!

Mission Impossible? (Ankle Booties)

Since earlier this fall, I have been lusting after ankle booties. Maybe it's because I hardly have any really cute shoes for fall and winter. Sure, I can wear my Bearpaw boots every once in awhile, but it would be nice to have a dressier option.

I had a lot of trouble deciding what exact pair I wanted to invest in. I didn't want it to break the bank, so I was steering towards a price range between $30-$60. I wanted it to have a low wedge heel, preferably around 2-3 inches, so I can (attempt) to wear it to my classes and on errands. And it must be in a neutral color, most likely brown, taupe or grey.

I also had problems figuring out which style would be most flattering. I am pretty petite, and I know that ankle booties can be hard to pull off for smaller women. Originally, I wanted a pair that I could wear bare-legged in early fall with dresses and miniskirts, but I'm thinking that I should stick with wearing them with skinny jeans and tights or leggings. I'm also considering wearing them with cuffed boyfriend jeans.

The one pair I found that I really loved were the ALDO Pirnie booties. They have a hidden wedge heel (wedge is always easier to walk in) and a chic corduroy construction with a leather wrap-around buckle in a contrasting shade. I fell in love with their quirky but cute look, but I wasn't quite willing to drop over $60 for them. I almost forgot about these booties. But then I was graciously gifted with an Amazon gift card...and the wheels started turning. I looked them up on Amazon's website and lo and behold, there they were, in grey (my preferred shade) and for only $27.99! What a steal, right? I wasted no time and snapped them right up.

I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived just a few days later and I was eager to try them on. When I finally got home for Christmas break, I got the opportunity to test them out--and I gotta say I love them even more in person! I ordered a size up from my usual 6 and they fit perfectly, with just a little slippage that can be fixed with some socks. The instep is ruched, which adds a cute touch, and I love the flared top part. They look a little weird, because the opening is too wide for my ankles, but I still like them a lot. I can't wait to wear them with grey tights and even possibly jeggings/skinny jeans. Overall, I think the booties were a very smart buy!

Can you believe it's only 25 days til Christmas?! I can't believe how fast this year's flown by. I am super excited for the holidays, though, and getting off from school for a whole month. College is great :) Except for the finals, of course. Since coming back from Thanksgiving break, I've been pretty busy with last-minute tests and projects. I can't wait to get a break from all this school stuff!

I scored this pullover sweater for only $20 the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. It wasn't even Black Friday yet, and the stores were already rolling out their deals. I'm not complaining though--it was nice to get some steals without having to deal with the crowds. I like this sweater because I have nothing like it in my closet--I usually stick with thinner stripes and all my sweaters are cardigans. But a change every once in awhile is nice, and I really like the look of this new sweater. The purchase was inspired by my sister, who bought a similar one from Abercrombie & Fitch recently.

H&M Coming to Denver!

Good news for all you Colorado-based frugal fashionistas out there--H&M is coming to the Denver Pavilions!

The wait will finally be over as of next Thursday, the grand opening of the state's first H&M store. It's moving into the former Niketown store. Devoted fans who show up early enough will be rewarded with a free t-shirt and gift cards ranging from $10-500 in value.

H&M is a retailer headquartered in Sweden that specializes in "fast fashion", or high-end trends for low prices. The store often features special designer lines at a fraction of the cost.

I know I'll be hitting up H&M as soon as possible--probably not on opening day, as school (unfortunately) has to come first--but Thanksgiving break a week or so later will be the perfect opportunity to get my shop on...without breaking the bank!

The Rainbow Connection [of Outerwear]

Why can't winter be colorful? Lately, a lot of retailers are offering shoppers an array of options when it comes to outerwear, especially when it comes to colors. Almost every color of the rainbow, in many shades and hues, can be found and easily worn. Wearing a bright orange or yellow jacket, for instance, might seem too scary and extreme, but both look great when paired with khaki pants or dark wash skinnies. Purple leather gloves can amp up a dreary cold day look. Scarves in royal blue and hot pink make adorable accessories that go with almost anything.

So this winter, don't let your accessories and outerwear be blah and colorless--stand out in a rainbow of shades!

Haven't you heard--nerds are in! Sometimes, you just gotta let your inner geek shine through. Today I did just that with this outfit. Okay, I think it's pretty cute and preppy, but it's kinda school-girl ish, which makes me feel like I'm a "nerdy" straight-A student. But who says straight-A can't be chic? I added in plenty of accessories, from my favorite headband to a wrist full of bangles, and the sparkly tights are always a good addition. The glasses add to the whole "school girl cool" look that I was going for with this outfit. It was so cold today (which I loved, btw) so I paired the tunic and shorts/tights with my brand new sweater I got on Sunday. It's simple but cute, and I've been needing something warm and in this shade for quite some time. It pairs nicely with the whole outfit and makes me feel okay with being a preppy "nerd"!

What's your favorite neutral? A lot of people will probably say black for its elegance or some kind of brown/tan for its ruggedness but for me, it's grey. Say what? I know grey seems boring, blah and downright depressing to a lot of people, but it's not like you have to go around in an all-grey ensemble. Neutrals are for mixing and matching, after all. So I decided to put my never-before-worn coral culottes (I ordered them probably a month ago but hadn't gotten the opportunity to wear them) to good use and pair them with a few grey items. The shorts themselves are very vibrant in color, and I thought they could easily be toned down with a nice neutral. I think grey goes very well with coral--it lessens the impact without making the shorts seem average. It allows them to stand out, in a tasteful way. I also mixed and matched the shades of grey I used. The lace tee is a very dark charcoal, the sweater is a medium heather grey and the tights are a light almost-blue grey. I also wore my Bearpaw boots, which are about the same shade as the sweater. I know it may seem weird to be wearing all these different hues and with a very bright color, but it works because the outfit is grounded in one neutral tone.

Fall is finally here, I can feel it in the air and see it in the 10-day weather forecast! Today was the first day in quite awhile that it was below 70 degrees and it felt perfect!

I was able to wear my brown tights for the first time since spring...and also my neglected Bearpaw boots. Once you start wearing those, you know it's fall. I kept my outfit mostly neutral (brown) but added in a pop of color with my slouchy sweatshirt and beloved owl pendant. I love spice shades in autumn, and pairing them with neutrals (especially shades of brown) always looks put together.

Life's a blur :)

I love this time of year! The first day of fall was on Friday, but it hasn't quite started to feel chilly yet. There is definitely a different feeling in the air than summer, so mixing sweaters with shorts is the perfect compromise.

The color palette of my outfit is pretty simple and neutral: forest green, dark brown and tan. But forest green isn't your typical neutral--that's why this outfit isn't blah and basic. I've had this sweater since I was a freshman in high school (!) and I still love it. I haven't found anything quite like it since. Forest green is a somewhat unusual fall shade, but it works. I jazzed it up with some blingy accessories and kept the footwear simple by donning my beloved tan moccasins (unpictured).

Once the cold weather hits, I'll be pairing this sweater and cami combo with dark brown twill shorts and brown tights, or a camel corduroy mini skirt and brown tights with boots.

Isn't it crazy how things change so much in just 2 years? Looking back, I can't believe that I was a senior in high school only 2 years ago--time really does fly. I feel so much more mature now, having a whole year (and 5 weeks!) of college under my belt.

One thing that hasn't changed quite as much is my wardrobe. In both of the OOTD photos above, I'm wearing a skirt that I love! It's awesome for fall, because it's in muted shades, and layers well over tights. As you can probably guess, it's gotten a lot of wear in the 2 years I've owned it. It may seem a little strange that a very young adult like me would still have a piece I had 2 years ago, but I actually have a few other pieces that I've owned since I was a freshman in high school!

Honestly, my style has changed somewhat. I'm trying to dress more sophisticatedly, while still having fun with my clothes. I think I'm more of a rule-breaker now, and I'm not as afraid to take fashion risks. 2 years ago, I doubt I would have bought a lace tee or an owl pendant, but now I own both and I love 'em. I still like the colorblocking that I did in the picture from 2 years ago, but I'm doing it in new ways and working towards being comfortable with mixing patterns.

Some things change, but others stay them same, and that's just how I like it! Hopefully, I'll be able to hold onto this skirt for another 2 years!

Duster cardigans. Capelet jackets. Moccasin booties. Tights. Loop scarves. Slouchy skinnies. Tall boots. What do these have in common? They're my fall must-haves!

This past weekend, I rediscovered the joy that is layering. I missed it over the summer, when temps were rarely cooler than 85. But Saturday was a nice relief from the heat, and made me crave fall. Though it felt a little weird at first to be wearing such a thick sweater when it's still technically summer, I love how cute and cozy it looked with my tunic, culottes and tights. And it inspired me to hunt down more duster cardis. I think they look really cute over skirts or shorts with tights.

Accessorizing is key for fall--that's where the scarves, jackets, tights and boots come in! I have a few pairs of tights (the sparkly navy ones above, light grey sweater tights, brown, brown striped leggings and cream pointelle ones) but a girl can always use a few more pairs, right? I love how they look with boots, which is why I'm lusting after a pair of tall, non-Ugg-style boots. They look totally polished but still casual. Scarves make me feel cozy, and they're a great alternative to necklaces. And capelet-type jackets are great for slightly chilly fall days.

Even on a dreary, cold, rainy day (like it was here today!) I still like to stand out and look cute and cheery. Today's outfit is fairly simple, mostly blue, with pops of color (royal blue and pink) and also a lot of sparkle and shine.

These tights have been my fave since I got them for Christmas last year. They have a nice subtle sparkle to them that makes them stand out but not be obnoxious. They pair very well with my sparkly ballet flats. The only downside is that the shoes aren't the best in the rain--they end up getting very wet in the toe area! Oh, the things we do for fashion ;)

Sock It To Me!

Socks used to be the forgotten accessory. Who really cares that much about socks, anyway? No one will see them (probably), so does it really matter if they're cute (or match, for that matter)?

This season, a lot of my favorite stores are selling socks. Not just any old socks, but cute socks. All kinds of patterns and colors. Knee-high and slouchy, they're perfect for a bold school girl look with a mini skirt and cardi. Or if you're feeling shy, you can let just a little sock peek out from cropped boyfriend jeans. Socks are totally versatile, and are great for cooler days when you want to stay warm but still want to look good.

It's no secret that my favorite color is pink. I can't believe that ten years ago, I used to shun it in favor of "less girly" colors. I remember those tomboy days. Luckily, now I'm embracing my girliness and having a closet full of pink is one of those perks.

Honestly, though, I don't really have that much pink. But I love wearing what I do have often because the color is just so happy and inviting. It also goes great with many colors, especially brown and burgundy.

Today, I decided to wear one of my favorite cardigans with a new Abercrombie tank top and dark brown twill shorts I bought a month or so ago. The sweater is long and lightweight; the perfect length to wear with shorts and great for chillier almost-fall mornings.

I think I'll be relying a lot on layers this fall. I have morning classes (9 am!) and when I leave for them, it's a little cold but by the afternoon it's nice and sunny. This way, I'll always be prepared...not to mention cute!

I used to think spice shades were blah, boring, etc. I mean, yeah, I like orange and red, but not in muted tones. I have to admit that they're perfect for fall: bold without being obnoxious, mix well with neutrals and universally-flattering. What's not to like?

I got in this trend by pairing a new buy (orange cropped hoodie) with basic shades for a poppin' colorblock look. It's a simple style, but great for this transition period between summer and fall. When cooler weather hits, I'll switch out the shorts for skinny khaki cargos and dark brown fringe moccasin boots.

I never used to be into stripes. I used to hate them, actually, and avoid them like I avoid eggs. I thought they weren't flattering, but now I have a few striped pieces that I love and that look great on me. This tee is one of them. The color is very bold, but pairs very nicely with a pair of navy culottes. I felt totally nautical wearing it! The addition of the glasses was just a fun touch, as was all the different photo effects. I love playing around with the color of photos to give them a completely different feel.

The Boho Beat

Being back on campus, I've been able to get more outfit inspiration from all the students around me. Naturally, most of them are very underdressed (compared to me), but there are a select few that have stood out.

I've mentioned before that my style is a mix of preppy and girly with a little dash of hippie mixed in there. This year, I think the boho trend is still going strong (the 70s are back!) and I'd love to include more hippie-inspired pieces in my closet.

A few of my favorite trends right now are flashy pendants (such as this one--I actually bought this online and I can't wait to wear it!), fringe booties (I'm deciding between pewter and chestnut), oversize poncho-style sweaters and leather jackets (faux, of course).

I can't wait to show off my newly hippie-esque wardrobe on the streets of my campus this fall!

As much as I dread leaving summer behind for classrooms, long treks to and from lectures and homework, I love fall. It certainly doesn't quite feel like fall here yet--it's still in the low-to-mid 90s--but I know yellow leaves and cooler temps are just around the corner. As sad as I am that summer's nearly over, I'm also extremely excited for fall to arrive. I'm already beginning to stock up on essentials that can transition between late summer and early fall. I'm also on the lookout for stand-out autumn pieces.

I love color, especially when it comes to my clothes. My closet is full of [most] colors in all different shades and I even have a few multicolored items. However, I usually shy away from very colorful outfits. If I'm going to wear, for instance, a lime green tank top, I'll probably pair it with some denim or khaki shorts so it can stand out more. But I'm starting to play around with color more and loving the results. I usually wear this miniskirt with a light pink tank, and while that looks okay, this new combo is more "Wow"! The coral cardi and bright pink tank play off each other nicely and show off the less noticeable colors in the skirt. I decided to pair the outfit with an understated necklace and tons of bracelets (also in shades of coral and pink). My new ring also works well with this ensemble. I'm starting to really like standing out and making a bold, colorful statement!

Dog Days of Summer [Shopping]

Little did I know after my last haul just two weeks ago that I'd have another one so soon. As much as I love clothes and I adore shopping, I'm not a compulsive shopper. Most of the times I'm at the mall, I'm window shopping. Haul shopping is not in my budget...usually. But because I was graciously gifted with some birthday money, I thought a little more shopping was in order. Another haul? Why not!

HOLLISTER

Bay Shore lace knit layer in dark grey (HCo., $34.50); Tecolote Canyon twill shorts in navy (HCo., $15)

I've been eyeing this lace tee since July, and I was determined to buy it. On my last haul, I didn't see it, but luckily the store had plenty of these. I had no lace in my closet prior to this purchase and I'm so glad I bought it because it will add a girly element to just about everything, including my boy fit crop jeans. It is definitely see-through, though, so if you buy it, make sure to wear a black bra or a colorful cami underneath. It comes in grey, white and navy.

I wasn't planning on buying this, but when I saw it near the back of the store in this pretty royal blue color, I couldn't resist. It was also fairly cheap, at just $20. It fits right at my hips, so it'll be perfect to wear with shorts and minis. It comes in navy stripe, dark grey stripe (I may have to snap this one up, too) and solid colors (navy, blue, heather grey and dark grey). I'm starting to really like stripes, especially thin stripes.

Apparently, I'm really into royal blue! It's honestly not an overload, though, because I don't think I owned anything in this shade prior to yesterday! This shirt was actually half price at the store, so it was a real steal. It's a pretty thick knit, so it'll probably work better in fall than right now, but it also looks great with twill shorts. It comes in 9 other shades, so you can get your plaid fix easily!

ABERCROMBIE KIDS

I found this in the clearance section for only $19! It's very cute and definitely my style. The XL fits well and it'll look perfect with shorts now and skinny jeans and a cardi in fall and winter. I love the kids store because I can usually find something that fits me for a lot less than a similar item at A&F.

FOREVER 21

Yesterday was my first foray into Forever 21 (yes, I know, I'm so behind!) and I've gotta say, I was pretty impressed. But I think mixing metals is okay, so this should work fine!

I think I've started to OD a little bit on the florals. Sure, I love 'em--they're pretty, girly and completely unique from piece to piece--but still. Out of all the patterns currently in my closet (stripes, polka dots, plaid), florals are the most abundant. I'm not quite sure why, but it seems like I'm just drawn to florals and end up buying them more than other patterns. Now that I've realized I have a "problem", I'm staying away from the florals in favor of stripes (both vertical and horizontal) and solids. I don't have a lot of solid pieces in my closet, but I know that they make up the basis of a great outfit. I'd love to buy some really flashy jewelry (such as a jewel-embellished owl necklace at American Eagle) but since most of my clothes are patterned, they would take away from the "wow factor" of the necklace. During my most recent shopping trip, I think I did a great job of staying away from florals and prints in general. Everything I bought is neutral enough to be able to wear with almost anything, and that's definitely something I've been needing for awhile!

A Tale of 5 Handbags

If you own or have ever owned a designer bag, you'll know that attachment you feel to a high-end purse. When you first get it, you'll usually handle it with a lot of care, to make sure it doesn't get dirty or lost. You might get a lot of compliments about it at first. As time goes on, and maybe you acquire more purses, you might forget about your first bag a little bit, but it'll never be totally neglected. I think a lot of females have this kind of experience with their first (or tenth!) designer bag.

I got my first designer purse on Christmas of 2008. My mom had gotten her first one a few months earlier and decided it was time that I could have my own. I had no idea that I was getting one, so I was really excited. It was a Coach hobo-style purse, with many different colorful Coach patterned patches.

The next Christmas, I got the Fossil Hathaway Glazed Tote in brown. Even though I love bright and patterned bags, neutrals are always a necessity and I love how simply stylish this tote is. It can hold a lot, too!

A few weeks later, my mom's friend bought a lot of clearanced designer bags from Dillard's and was going to give them to some of her friends. When I found out she had an orange one, I asked my mom to get it for me. I ended up getting the Gianni Bini orange leather hobo bag. The color is so fresh and works in all seasons, and I love the zipper detailing on the body of the purse and the handle.

For my 18th birthday last year, my sister gave me a pink Steve Madden bag. Pink is my absolute favorite color, and since I have so many pink things in my closet, it goes with a lot. It's also very huge (which I like) so I can fit school stuff in there. It worked perfectly on campus last year.

This year for my birthday, I really wanted a Coach backpack. I originally was drooling over the gold sequined one, but when I realized it was going for at least $400 on eBay (!) I decided to find a cheaper one. When I discovered the Coach Poppy Daisy Graffiti backpack, I instantly put it on my wishlist. It was even cuter than the sequined one. This was the only designer bag I got that I wasn't totally surprised by, because a week or so before my birthday, my dad asked me to pick out a specific one, since each backpack had a slightly different pattern. Even though it was a surprise, I still love it a lot.

Honestly, if I had to pick a favorite designer, I think I'd go with Coach. I love their signature hang tags and they have so many different bold designs that I fall in love with every season. But I love my other bags, too :)

[Small] Mall Haul

Shopping is one of my favorite activities, but I really don't buy anything that often, maybe 6 or so times per year. Mostly, I end up getting one or two things at a time to add in to my closet but every once in a while, I have an unexpected haul. In my last haul earlier this summer, I snagged a few items for a great price and I've been able to wear them many times since. This shopping trip, I was determined to avoid anything too summery (since I won't get too many more chances to wear it) and instead find a few pieces that can transition well into fall and also work right now. I think I was pretty successful!

HOLLISTER

When I saw that these were only $15 (originally $29.50), I snapped them up. They also have them in white and khaki, but I've got a pair of khaki shorts already and white isn't practical for me. They also have the Brooks Beach shorts for $15, which are similar but are cuffed. My sister bought the same shorts (even the same color!) earlier in the summer. Now we can be shorts twins ;)

When I saw this cropped hoodie, I was a little confused. I had bought the exact same hoodie (but in aqua) a year ago on clearance--why was this still in stores? But when I saw the price ($7.90) I knew I couldn't pass it up. I can always use a little more orange in my closet.

I had just discovered these shorts while browsing online just before I left to go shopping. I fell in love because brown is my favorite neutral and I have a new obsession with twill shorts. Plus these are cuffed, making them even better for nicer events. Also available in light grey (they didn't have my size, unfortunately), light pink (I like pink but I shy away from very colorful shorts) and white, all $20 (originally $40). These shorts will work great in the fall because of their muted color. I also found this tank for just $26.60 (30% off original price of $38) and liked how pretty it was. The color is totally different than anything in my closet, but it's very girly, which I love. This is available in light grey, drak grey (would have bought if I had had more money to spend), navy and white. I had a 20% off entire purchase card, so the two items cost just under $40.

Above is the pair of pajamas I got from Gilly Hicks for my birthday. They didn't come as a set, and the tee isn't technically a sleep shirt, but I think it's super-cute with the koala applique. The shorts are very girly, which is right up my alley.

I've already started reading this book, and it's very useful. I never knew the history of so many things I wear so it's really an interesting read.

This is probably my favorite present: the Coach Poppy Daisy Graffiti backpack! I love how it can work as a school bag and as a purse and the graphic black & white design mixed with a burst of red and magenta. This is my 5th designer bag, and I know it's gonna get a lot of use, just like my other ones.

I do tend to wear some of the same jewelry (especially bracelets) day after day, so I need to work on switching those up. Considering some of my favorite stores include Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister, you might assume that I have a very preppy style. However, I think I'd classify my style as a mix between girly, preppy and boho. I'm not one to wear polos with khakis, but I have a few "preppy" pieces in my closet. These twill shorts are a relatively new addition. I don't think I've ever owned khaki shorts, so it was definitely time to include some in my wardrobe. I love that they're dressier than denim, but just as versatile. Today, I decided to take them in a girly direction, pairing them with a ruffly pink tank and a pink plaid scarf. I usually wear necklaces, but I'd love to add more patterned scarfs into my life. They're a fun statement accessory. This outfit works perfectly for both casual and nicer events. The tank is from Abercrombie Kids, which may seem a little silly, but they have similar items to A&F at a fraction of the price, and often their pieces fit a little better. I'm a "straight-up-and-down" girl so kids clothes definitely suit my frame better. My only complaint about this tank is that it's a little long to wear with these shorts, but I'm petite so I'm used to things being too big. I also have longer legs than torso, so I'm on the lookout for shorter tops to wear with my short shorts.

How To: Wear A Romper

Forget little sundresses and flowy miniskirts--this summer, it's all about the romper! It's a perfect playful addition to anyone's warm-weather wardrobe. Rompers look similar to dresses, but are better for casual occasions. They can be hard to pull off, but typically work very well on petites and taller women as well. However, almost anyone can find the perfect romper to suit their style and figure.

To choose the best romper for you, think about where you'd like to wear it. If you typically wear very casual pieces, pick out a simple cotton romper in a bright, solid color (like Hollister's Malibu romper, pink, $17.94). You can then amp it up by adding a funky patterned scarf and a pair of wedges. If you like to make a statement, try a pattern, like animal print or stripes (Charlotte Russe One Shoulder Leopard Romper, $24.99). Keep this look from going overboard by sticking with basic accessories. If you prefer a girly or elegant style, find a floral romper or one that has ruffle detailing (Forever 21 Floral Flounce Romper, $19.80). Find a pair of polished neutral wedges and don't forget a big statement bag.

My style is very girly, so when I shopped for a romper, I looked for a floral one. I found a cute red one at Hollister (no longer available), with large flowers, a pleated button placket, pockets and tie-waist detailing. It's a simple style, but the bold color and pattern make it stand out and work for casual outdoor events as well as going out for lunch or dinner. In fact, I wore mine on a recent vacation and it worked perfectly for window shopping and enjoying dinner outside.

Remember: the most important tip for rocking a romper is to have fun and be confident. If you feel hot, you'll look hot!

If you took a quick tour through my closet, you'd probably see a lot of pink, bright and pastel colors, florals and quite a few pairs of sandals. What you might not see is a few boho/Navajo pieces that I've come to really love. Like some poncho-like thick knit short-sleeved sweaters or a bright red blouse with "native-looking" aqua and white trim. Or this cropped top I bought this spring from American Eagle. I instantly fell in love with the pattern, the silhouette and the pop of the bright colors on top of the charcoal grey. I knew I had to buy it, and I've loved wearing it ever since. It's one of my favorite new additions to my closet that's helped to transform my wardrobe from mainly girly to girly with a hint of boho flair. I paired it with a simple orange cami that I got a few years ago and haven't worn much since. I'm glad I found a use for it. On bottom, I chose a destroyed denim mini I bought last summer. I love its edgy, worn look. I kept the jewelry simple: a few coral beaded bracelets mixed with metal charm bracelets and a beachy shell necklace. Usually, I like to wear my hair wavy with this top but I decided to rock the straightened second-day hair look with a messy side ponytail. It still worked to pull the whole outfit together.

Bold Summer Lusts

Summer is the season for bright colors and bold patterns everywhere! The colors of nature--from the vibrant blue of the sky to the emerald green grass to the brilliant orange sunsets to the rainbow of hues seen in wildflowers--can inspire a wardrobe change during the warmer months of the year. I always look for bold shades and daring patterns during the summer and rely less and less on neutrals. After all, summer only lasts a little while...why not make a statement?

Mini Hollister Haul (and more!)

I don't know about you, but I love holiday weekends! I've been off of school for the past two weeks, so it's not a long weekend for me, but I enjoy all the festivities and events that surround a holiday. I especially love all the sales that pop up around the major (and not so major) holidays. Yesterday, I took advantage of some great deals at my favorite stores.

HOLLISTER

Everything I got was on sale, plus I got to take 30% off my entire purchase, so it all cost me $35. I bought the Brooks Beach romper in red, the Brooks Beach twill shorts in khaki (I don't know why they had the same name!) and the Classic Beach Flip Flop in coral. I've been lusting after rompers since last summer and I finally got up the nerve to buy one. I can't wait to wear it with simple accessories. Khaki shorts are a staple everyone needs in their closet. Everything in the store was 30% off, so how could I say no? The saleswoman who helped us out was wearing this cute oversize neon-striped top and I fell in love with it. I hoped I could find it...and I did, just a few feet away (AE Soft Drape Sunset T in neon lemon lime)! I snapped it up in lime green. It's the perfect casual top that looks great with denim shorts and minis.

I bought the denim cuffed shorts above (Kelly medium-wash shorts) because I didn't own any short denim shorts! These will also be my go-to during the hot summer months and even into fall, with tanks, plaid shirts, cropped tops and sweaters.

Growing up in Colorado, I've learned a little about "Western" culture. However, I am more of a city girl than a cowgirl! I've always leaned towards girlier styles, but every once in a while, I like to return to my roots and dress a little rugged...with a touch of chicness.

April showers bring May...snow?! Where I live, that's the new phrase! My summer vacation officially began on Friday and it's been nothing but cool and cloudy since then. I woke up to a dusting of snow this morning! So what's a girl to do when she longs for warm days but ends up with grey skies and jacket weather?

Just because the weather isn't spring-like doesn't mean you have to dress drab! Incorporate some vibrant shades and bold patterns into your outfit to brighten up your day. Stock up on candy-colored cardis and tanks to mix and match.

Layering is also key. If you've been dying to wear that adorable floral dress for weeks but it feels more like February than May, don't despair! You can pair it with a sweater or even a light jacket. Leather is a great way to add some edge to a girly outfit.

Accessorize! If the weather's not too chilly, wear your favorite pair of wedge sandals or throw on a lightweight scarf. Pile on the bangles, try some dangly earrings and go bold with a necklace.

You don't have to wait for warmer weather to arrive to start including summery pieces in your wardrobe--just get creative and you can look sunny in no time!

Strolling Through the Flowers

I can't believe it's almost summer! I'm so ready for school to be over (only one more week of classes left and then finals) so I can spend my summer tanning out on my deck, going for long walks through the trees and just enjoying every second of the warm weather.
One item on my wishlist for summer '11 is a romper (or two)! I have loved them since last summer, when I first started seeing them a lot. They are the perfect alternative to a dress--great for when you want to look a little dressy and carefree at the same time. Many that I've seen this season are chambray, and while I'm normally a fan, I would prefer a floral romper to accentuate my girly style. A bright color would be great for standing out!

Shorts: From Casual to Chic

I can't believe it's been almost a month since I last posted! I've been so busy since coming back from spring break, but hopefully I'll be able to get out at least a post per week. With all the warm weather, I've been more inspired! I love spring and summer outfits the best so these next few months will be great.
Many people think shorts are just for lounging around it, maybe doing some work around the yard or hanging out at the pool or beach in. But, they can work really well in a nicer environment, too. The key is to pick the right pair. Twill shorts are dressier than denim, so they are perfect for all-day shopping sprees, lunch with the girls and even outdoor parties. I actually prefer twill to denim, and I'm on the lookout for even more pairs to add to my closet--right now I only have one pair!

This is one way to dress up your favorite pair of shorts: add a tank top with some interest (like ruffles, lace, beading, etc.), top it off with a long cardigan (but make sure it doesn't go past your shorts) and a scarf or statement necklace to pull it all together. For a look similar to this, try the Shea shorts ($20), the Gemma cami in white ($48) and the Leigh cardigan in heather grey ($98), all from Abercrombie & Fitch.

Twill shorts can also be pretty casual. My favorite way to "dress them down" is with a hoodless sweatshirt. On my drive back home from school yesterday, my mom and I stopped at our favorite mall. She had a 30% off coupon for Eddie Bauer, but of course, I was just interested in hitting up my favorite stores!
What really caught my eye were the new styles at American Eagle. For spring 2011, their theme is nautical and surplus, which are both big trends this season. Normally, I would just pass by these things without taking a second look since they're not really my style, but I actually have fallen in love with surplus!

The muted shades of grey, olive, khaki and white are the perfect backdrop for brighter colors. Their tough-girl appeal makes them great for 'sweetening up" with floral prints and girly silhouettes.

Can you believe Valentine's Day is only a little over a week away? January seemed to go by so fast for me, which I'm really happy about. I really want it to be spring already! I'm sick of the unusually-cold temps and grey skies--Colorado is usually better than this in February!
Even though I'm single, I still like the whole idea of Valentine's Day. In fact, I like it better as a single! There's no pressure to buy the perfect present, but it's a great day to think about the other people you love in your life--friends, siblings, parents, even pets.
So that brings me to my photo inspiration of the day! A couple of weekends ago, I was running some errands with a friend of mine, and we were at SuperTarget (one of my favorite places to get groceries, not to mention a great place to score deals on clothes!). I spotted this pink heart-shaped bowl with sparkles inside and I just had.to.have.it. I love anything pink, and it's the perfect piece to brighten up any bowl of cereal! It's great for Valentine's Day, of course, or any other time.

And...it's the perfect inspiration for all things Valentine-y...all wearable things, that is! Like the AEO Suede Ballet Flat ($34.50, in red). Brrrrrr! Seems like it's cold all across the U.S. It sure is here in Colorado--it's about 0 degrees, but with the windchill it feels well below that. We usually don't get temps this cold here, so it's definitely a wake-up call! My jackets and winter accessories sure will get a lot of use this week.
That's why I'm looking forward to spring more than ever! I can't wait for 70 degree weather, budding trees, blooming flowers and the smell of warm, fresh air. I can't wait to do my homework out on the green grass and go for long walks without freezing my butt off. I can't wait to eat berries again, and sip lemonade out in the sunshine. Things I'm Loving Right Now

It's the end of January, but the only thing on my mind is spring! I'm getting sick of the wind (not that it'll go away in a few months, but it'll definitely be warmer), cold and extremely dry air. My poor skin!
So here are some of my current lusts--I probably won't get much use out of them until warmer weather rolls around, but I can still look forward to using/wearing them.

Hollister's Scripps Pier dress (in light green, $39.50). Actually, I'm kinda liking most of their dresses, but I don't have much green in my wardrobe and I especially like the styling of this dress. Spring must-have.
Coach's latest Poppy bags. I'm addicted to purses, and I especially love Coach's Poppy line. The bags are just so bright, girly and pretty that I can't resist them. The Petal Print Glam tote ($198) is probably my favorite right now.
Wedge sandals. Oh, flip-flops, you'll always be one of my favorite shoes, but I'm really feeling the love for wedges right now. I'd like some in a pretty ballet pink (Donald J Pliner Sameh, $250) or a sunny yellow (Diba Dance With Me, $69.95).
Bath & Body Works Island Escape Collection. Can you say tropical vacation? These are like a Caribbean adventure in a bottle. My favorite so far is the Fiji Passionfruit, but I've gotta try them all. Yum.

Freshman Year...Take Two!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I just started my second semester of my freshman year of college yesterday and I'm already swamped with work! I guess second semester really is a lot harder than first. Hopefully, I'll still be able to keep up with blogging :)
Back-to-school for me means...new clothes! I got and bought plenty of new stuff over Christmas break and I'm using these first two weeks back to show them off. Most of the clothes are appropriate for winter, which is definitely great, since it snowed here today! I am already ready for spring...but the colder weather inspired me to do a post about making a good first impression during second semester. Most people have all new classes, and it's a great opportunity to start anew, make new friends and possibly redefine your style. This last one can be hard to do if you're used to comfort, especially in these wintery months.
I am still vowing not to wear sweats to class...no matter how cold it is or how tired I am. I'm waking up two hours before I have to go to class so I have time to put on a nice outfit, fix my hair and apply makeup. I've decided to plan my outfits a week in advance, so I don't spend an hour staring at my closet, wondering what to wear.
This is an outfit I would definitely wear to classes--it's comfortable and warm without looking like I just threw it on. I like how all the colors play off each other (the jacket even matches the blue flowers on the cardigan!), the fringe booties add a touch of boho and the pearl bracelet makes the outfit refined and girly.

Sale at Victoria's Secret

Sorry I haven't posted in a while--our wireless modem broke down and we had to wait a few days til our internet was back up again. It sure felt like the "old days" with no technology to me!
Today, I went to Victoria's Secret, since they were having a sale on a lot of their bras and panties. Being a college student, I need all of those I can get, so I can do laundry a lot less often! VS is my favorite place to get good-quality bras and their panties are quite adorable. Unfortunately, they're usually a bit expensive. But with their semi-annual sale, going on right now, you can score great deals on the hottest essentials.
Every store will be different, but yours should have a good selection; order online if you want even more options.
I have a small bust (32A) but I was able to find a cute demi-cup push-up bra in my size. For those of you with smaller busts like mine, a great push-up bra can work wonders. Demi-cups are also great because they create cleavage.
So check out your VS and VS PINK stores to get a lot of essentials for a low price!

Thinking About Tanks

A blizzard is supposed to blow in here overnight, and while I like the snow, I can't help but wish it were spring break already. I'm ready to break out the dresses and sandals!
One of my unofficial resolutions for this year is to try some new things, fashion-wise. I've always been more of a cami girl than a tank top girl, but I have a feeling that that's going to change in 2011! I love babydoll tanks, but I'd also like to try some basic tanks, with a little extra detailing. Tank tops are perfect for spring weather, but can also work during the winter under hoodies and cardigans.
Some of the latest trends include tiny buttons, lace (always a classic), floral neckline detailing, ruffled tiers and waist drawstrings. Look for tanks in go-with-everything shades, such as navy and dark grey, or more poppin' tones, like lemon and coral. Wear them alone, underneath a springy cardigan, layered over other tanks and under plaid button-downs. There's no limit to what you can do with tank tops!

Today, it was just me and my mom since my dad was at work and my sister started school again yesterday. My mom always has Fridays off so we had a little girl-to-girl time this afternoon. We grabbed salads for lunch at Elephant Bar and then headed to the mall.
I was trying to find a sweater at Hollister. Most of the store was 40-50% off, so I hoped I could find it at the store so I wouldn't have to pay for shipping. It was an Epic Only style, but occasionally the store stocks some overflow items. Unfortunately, they didn't have that sweater but I found several other cute things I debated about buying but ended up leaving empty-handed. One of them was the Big Dume button-down shirt ($19.75) in navy plaid. I liked it because I don't have much plaid in my wardrobe and it has sparkly thread. I also checked out the jeans and liked the Cali Flares ($23.70) in rinse. I decided I would rather get another pair of slouchy jeans from American Eagle so I could use up the rest of my gift card. The Fallbrook twill pants ($19.75) in stone were also cute--a few posts back I explained that I bought them and then decided to return them--but I'm still not completely sold on them. If I had had more money, I probably would have bought them. The spring collection had a lot of great pieces, but since none of them were on clearance, I left the store without buying anything.
When I got home, I ordered the Dixon Lake sweater ($29.90) in burgundy online. I got such a good deal on it, since it originally cost $79.50! I fell in love with it the moment I saw it and knew I had to have it, but when Christmas came and went, I thought it would be gone for sure. With standard shipping, it only ended up costing me about $40, which is still a fraction of the original price. I haven't ordered anything online in quite a while, mostly because I hate paying for shipping, but in the future, if I like an Epic Only item, I'll just spend a few extra bucks and order it since it'll be worth it.
I can't wait to get my sweater when it comes--I'm just hoping it comes before I have to leave for school in a little over a week.

Obsessed!

One of my recent posts was a list of my fashion confessions. Now I want to do a post on some of the things I'm obsessed with--pieces I have a lot of in my closet or just can't get enough of.

SWEATERS: Who can ever have too many of this wardrobe staple? Mine come in all the colors of the rainbow (minus yellow and black, because I hate black), many styles from button-down cardigan to open fit and all kinds of detailing. I still have room for more...
FLIP-FLOPS: No, not the cheap-o rubber kind you wear to the pool. I always buy leather or faux-leather, and I'm on the lookout for cute details. This spring and summer, I'm looking for glammed-up sandals.
BABYDOLL TANKS: I'm a little upset, because I haven't been able to find these at any of my favorite stores in quite a few months. Maybe spring will bring a new crop of these. They're great for every frame and in my opinion, more flattering than fitted tank tops.
JEANS: Um, okay, who isn't a little obsessed with jeans? I've got a pair of dark-wash boot cuts (American Eagle), two pairs of dark-wash flares (AE & Abercrombie Kids), a pair of light-wash destroyed boy fits (AE) and two pairs of dark wash boy fits/slouchies (both AE). I'm still hunting down the perfect pair of destroyed dark-wash jeans, preferably in AE's new slouchy fit. I've never been a big fan of skinnies but I like a little variety in my jeans.
DRESSES/SKIRTS: I am such a girly-girl. If I could live in miniskirts and sundresses every day, I would. Of course, the Colorado climate doesn't quite allow for that, but I make do by pairing my minis with tights during the winter. I stick with my more muted colors, so it works for the season, but unfortunately, I don't have a dress yet that doesn't scream "summer". Definitely on my wishlist.

The holidays have come and gone and once again it's that time of year that I don't really like. The weather's pretty blah, I have to go back to school in a little less than two weeks, there aren't any holidays for awhile and I'm longing for spring break! Luckily, stores are already springing ahead and stocking pieces that will be more appropriate in two months but nevertheless, they remind me that the world goes on and soon enough it'll be springtime again.
American Eagle's already got a pretty decent selection of springwear in stores and online. I went shopping there a week ago and I was surprised to find that most of their winter stuff was gone or on the clearance racks. I did get a pretty good deal on a pair of their new jeans style, slouchy. They look best cuffed and will be perfect as spring capris. Be warned that they only come in regular length, so if you're a petite like me, they'll fit more like crops. But they're a great alternative to the ever-popular skinny jeans and can still work in the winter by tucking them into boots. The AE Sky-High Wedge Sandal ($49.50) is a simple wedge that will look great with the slouchy jeans or any other cropped pants. You'll stand tall in these no matter where you go in them.

A Few Fashion Confessions

On some of the blogs I follow, I've come across lists of confessions, whether life-related or more focused on a specific topic. They've inspired me to come up with my own list of fashion confessions.

I don't do casual. 'Casual' for me still involves some planning and accessorizing. I put on makeup every day even if I'm not leaving the house. I just feel better about myself if I put in some effort, even if no one else notices. I never wear sweats except to bed. Even in my most 'casual' outfit (a Hollister hoodie that isn't at all baggy and a nice pair of dark wash jeans), I still wear jewelry, fix my hair and put on a pair of cute shoes.
I am obsessed with planning. I always plan my outfits a week in advance by checking out the weather forecast and I get a little upset if I have to change my plans. This way, I don't have to stress out in the morning deciding what to wear.
The only thing I own over $100 are purses. And I got them for my birthday or Christmas, so I didn't have to pay for them. Everything else, I try to buy on clearance at my favorite stores or at least spend under $50 if they are full-price.
I pretty much only buy clothes from five stores. Abercrombie & Fitch, Abercrombie Kids, American Eagle, Gilly Hicks (online only) and Hollister. I like to think that I'm a loyal customer. And before you accuse me of blending in with the crowd, I rarely buy graphic hoodies or tees that everyone else wears. I get the sweaters, the babydoll tanks, the plaid shirts, the flip-flops that few others I see buy.
I like matching. A lot. Probably too much, so I'm trying new color combinations to see how they play off each other. Matching can be a good thing, but I don't want to get caught in a rut.
I love high-heels, but can't wear them very long. Even though I'm only 5'1, I usually end up wearing flats because they're way more comfortable than heels, especially when trekking across campus. I have three pairs of wedges that I only wear during the summer, but I hope to get more. I also hope I can learn to walk in them better, and not get blisters on my pinky toe.
I am 'addicted' to shopping. Okay, so I'm not like a compulsive shopper, but I really love any shopping trip. It gives me such a high. But since I only have a debit card, I'm forced to stay within the limits of the money I actually have. Which is a good thing.

PIOTD: Sleds & Snow

Happy New Year, everyone! Hope your NYE went well--mine was very fun and eventful until I fell asleep at 2 am (I blame it on being out all afternoon).
Today I got the chance to go sledding after it snowed on Thursday night. It was a great way to spend New Years Day and the cold air and sunshine were quite refreshing. The best part was, I didn't have to drive anywhere to find a decent sledding hill--I have one right in my own backyard! We live on 5 acres of land covered in pine trees, and the back part of our property has some nice hills. The snow wasn't very deep or packed, but it was still fun.

My PIOTD relates to the snow and sledding. I took a picture of my bright orange sled on top of the hill and it inspired me to do a post about brightly-colored outerwear.

Well, another year has come and gone! I look back and think about how different my life was a year ago, but I'm not disappointed. There have been ups and downs but overall it was a good year. Some of my best memories from 2010 were turning 18, graduating high school, going to my hometown (Phoenix, AZ) over spring break and starting college. It's been a pretty exciting year--here's hoping 2011 is even better.

Hi everyone! Hope your second-to-last day of 2010 is going well. I'm still very excited ater my shopping spree yesterday--I can't wait to wear all my new purchases, as well as the gifts I got for Christmas.

Sorry that I'm not actually wearing them, I've been very busy today and with all the snow that's been falling for a few hours, I'm feeling like today's a lazy stay-inside day. I was out all morning running errands and now I'm just relaxing inside and watching the snow fall. It's the first real snow that the Front Range (of Colorado) has gotten all season, so it's pretty big!

Christmas Round-Up Part 2

Yesterday was the big shopping day and I can definitely say that I spent the most I ever have in one day! Not to mention my arms hurt from carrying 5 bags but it was a great day.
My parents, sister and I went to Park Meadows in Denver and boy was it crowded! I thought by December 29th the after-Christmas crowds would have died down a little but it was crazier than ever.
We hit up Hollister first--was that a mistake or what! The store isn't very big and it was packed to the gills with teenage girls, guys and some moms all trying to spend their gift cards. I got shoved a few times and had to do a little gentle nudging myself. Everything in the store was 40% off, which probably explained the crowds. I didn't even consider buying anything I had to try on since the line for the dressing rooms was a mile long! I did manage to find one of the things I had planned on buying, the Royal Palms Beach sweater ($29.70) in burgundy. I don't really have anything this color and I liked its easy fit.
Next, it was on to American Eagle. My sister and I both got a $50 gift card to AE, plus $10 off any purchase of $35 or more so we had to check them out. At first I didn't really see anything that caught my eye, but then I saw some jeans towards the front that I kinda liked. They're the new Slouchy fit, which is totally my style. I prefer looser-fitting jeans over skinnies and these looked too cute to pass up. I wish I had found them in the authentic dark destroyed wash but the pair I got are more polished. I still had some money to spend on my gift card, so I checked out the clearance rack. That store was pretty busy, too, so it was hard to find anything cute in my size on the rack. But I happened to find a purple and navy polka-dotted cami that looked pretty cute and in my size. The XS part of the rack was pretty limited so I was lucky to find it. It'll look great under a navy cardigan. My sister liked it so much that she got it, too, in a size small. After all my purchases, plus the $10 off, I ended up with $10 left on my gift card!
My parents went to Eddie Bauer to spend their gift cards and after my mom bought her stuff, we went to Abercrombie & Fitch. I hadn't spent very much money so far, and since we rarely get to go to A&F, I was determined to find a lot of stuff. They were also offering 40% off the entire store which is a steal, considering A&F's usual prices. I was looking for the Kali sleep shorts ($19.60) in navy and I saw them a few times on the mannequins, but none were wearing XS. I bought the Julia pj pants ($24) in navy moose instead and I actually like them even more. Not content to just buy one thing, I also got the Benni sweater ($40.80) in heather grey. I couldn't pass this up because 1) I don't have very much grey in my closet, 2) I love sweaters with an easy open fit and 3) It was much cheaper than its original price of $68. I ended up spending a little under $70 at A&F.
But I wasn't done shopping quite yet. I needed a tank top of some sort to go under both sweaters I had bought. I wanted something pink and with some detailing since the sweaters I got aren't decorated. I hadn't found the perfect thing until we went to Abercrombie Kids next door. I'm lucky enough that I can fit in both juniors and some kids sizes so I can save money sometimes. I really liked the ruffly pink tank I saw at A&F, but it was almost $30. I saw a similar version at Abercrombie (Evette tank, $17.15, in dark pink) so I bought it in a size XL. Surprisingly, it only ended up costing me about $15, which I was very thankful for.
We ventured on to Bath & Body Works next so I could buy some lip gloss. If you haven't been there recently, a lot of their merch is on sale right now because they're trying to bring in all their spring stuff so stock up while you can. I ended up buying a Summer Vanillas lemon lip gloss for only 3 bucks!
I was super-tired after a long day of shopping but it was totally worth it to get all the great stuff I did, not to mention for a great price! Even braving the crowds was worth it. I'll post some pics of my new stuff very soon!

Photo Inspiration of the Day: Ornamental Techni(color)culture

I've been inspired by some of the blogs I follow and I've decided to start doing a photo inspiration of the day. I'll take a picture of something I encounter during the day and tie it into some outfits I've been looking at.

Today's PIOTD is some brightly-colored ornaments on the small Christmas tree I have in my bedroom. I know Christmas is over, but I like to keep my tree up til a week or so after New Year's because it just brightens up my whole day.

With the end of the year comes the arrival of spring wear. It probably won't be warm enough to wear most of these things for a few months, but it's still nice to shop ahead before all this stuff disappears.

All of this stuff is in stores now so you can look forward to any spring break plans while still enjoying those presents and leftovers!

Christmas Round-Up Part 1

It's hard to believe Christmas is over already! With all the commercials and music on the radio and the huge sales, most of us can't wait til the day arrives and when it's over, it always seems like it went by too fast.
Luckily, I had a very good Christmas yesterday. My parents, sister and I always spend the day with just the four of us and I like it that way. We don't rush to wake up and tear open the presents so we had a nice long breakfast and opened our stockings and then got dressed before we opened our gifts.
I got quite a few great things, including a sweater from Abercrombie & Fitch, grey Bearpaw boots, sparkly blue tights and a nice necklace from American Eagle. I also got a gift card to AE for $50 and I'm looking forward to a day of shopping later this week. I'll post all the pics of my new stuff soon. But my best gift would have to be the iPod Touch 4th generation! I've wanted it since my sister bought the 3rd gen for herself over the summer but the 4th gen is even better since it has a camera and a FaceTime app, which is similar to Skype. My mom's planning on getting a Touch, too, so she can FaceTime me when I'm away at school.
Hopefully I can take some good pictures with it and it'll be easy to use on the go, instead of having to take all my outfit shots at home.
After the presents were opened, we watched part of the "A Christmas Story" 24-hour marathon on TBS (favorite Christmas movie ever!) and then my dad, sister and I took a walk around the neighborhood while my mom made dinner. It was quite chilly but there was no snow so it was a refreshing walk. After dinner, we played a ridiculously fun game called Quelf and then had a pretty quiet rest of the night. It was a really good day.

Pre-Christmas Shopping Spree!

I know I'm slightly crazy for going shopping just 5 days before Christmas, but that's exactly what I was doing yesterday with my sister. However, we already got all of our shopping done for friends and family so this was just a little shopping trip just for us.

My sis really wanted to go to Hollister since they had a pair of pants there she wanted. When we got there, we found out that everything in the store was 30% off--what a deal! I wasn't planning on buying anything from there, but I looked around just in case. Nothing really grabbed me, but when my sister headed for the pants she liked (the Fallbrook twill pants, $27.65), I decided to check them out, too. I kinda liked them in stone, so I took them to the dressing room in size 0 short (the smallest size HCo. carries). They actually fit pretty well, snug but not too tight, just the right length and I liked the color. I took pics in the dressing room to show how they fit--sorry about the bad lighting! If you've ever been in a Hollister store, you'll know that they're very dark.

So I decided to buy them. But then we went to American Eagle next...and it completely changed my mind! I finally found the flats I've been looking for forever--the AE Sequin Ballet Flat ($19.50, pewter). Since they were $10 off the original price, I couldn't resist buying them, especially since they were actually in a size 6! When I tried them on with tights, they fit perfectly. I also found a pearl and metal chain bracelet for $12.50 and a chain and jewel necklace for $6.95, and since they were having their buy one get one 50% off jewelry sale, I only paid about $30 for all three items! That's a great steal, considering that if I had bought them all full-price, it would have cost me over $61!

But I decided that I didn't really need the pants that much, even though they were 30% off. So I returned them but hopefully I'll be able to find them again at a lower price after Christmas.

My Wardrobe Essentials

Unlike the stereotypic college girl, I actually put a little effort into what I'm wearing. No, make that a lot of effort! But to me, it's totally worth it. Yes, I have to endure the stares of sweats-and-Ugg-clad girls but I like showing off my sense of style to the world...or at least to my campus.
So here's my list of a few 'essentials' I've found to be necessary for me in my college journey so far:

Tights--Oh, yeah, these are one of my favorite wardrobe staples, especially since I'm someone who doesn't like to say goodbye to my skirts when the snow starts to fall. With so many colors, textures and styles to choose from, you can stock up (without forking over a lot of cash) and get a lot of looks! Currently, I have a pair of brown striped ankle leggings (thicker than tights), light grey sweater tights, dark brown tights and white pointelle tights. I've found these colors to be most versatile, but I wouldn't complain if I had a few more pairs ;)
A great bag. I have 5 of them, almost all designer, but that doesn't mean you can't get a good-quality purse that's inexpensive! Make sure yours has plenty of pockets for your cell phone and other essentials, plus enough room for a wallet, sunglasses, makeup and anything else you might stash in there.
Jackets. Before last year, I only really had one cute one--a brown bomber coat from American Eagle. I love that coat, especially the faux-fur-lined hood. But then around last Christmas, my mom bought me a raspberry Thinsulate-lined wool jacket from Delias that I also really love. And boy was I surprised over Thanksgiving when my sister gave me her navy puffer coat from Aeropostale that she didn't want anymore! So now I've got three great jackets that work with almost any outfit. And in Colorado, you definitely need jackets when winter comes knocking!
Bracelets. Let's just say I have an obsession with jewelry, especially bracelets. I get all of mine from American Eagle, because they have the cutest stuff at great prices--usually buy one get one 50% off! And I don't settle for just one type of bracelet...I've got everything from bangles (my sister got me hooked!) to blingy leather ones. I just love to stack them up and make a statement.
Sunglasses. A great pair can transform you from an average girl to a movie star look-alike. If you live somewhere very sunny like I do they're a must just to keep your eyes safe, but they can still be very chic.
Jeans. Who can live without jeans? For the most versatility, try different styles of jeans, from skinnies to bootcuts to boyfriends. American Eagle and Abercrombie Kids have a great selection of jeans that are good quality at affordable prices--Abercrombie Kids is great for those of us who are more petite and can't find jeans that aren't too long in most stores, while AE will fit almost any body.

Walking the Denver Runway

As a Colorado almost-native (I was born in Phoenix, AZ and lived there for almost 2 years), I have been to the capital city, Denver, many many times. My hometown of Colorado Springs is only 69 miles south of Colorado's biggest city so my family and I have made several day trips up there, whether it's to go to the airport (much, much better than the Colorado Springs airport!), some kind of attraction or the many malls (also much better). Despite what many people say, that only huge cities like NYC and LA have great fashion, Denver is also a mecca for upscale, runway-esque clothing.

One recent example of this was the Volunteers of America Holiday Fashion Show last Saturday. Unlike many fashion shows, it featured outfits that actually work for the season. Colorado can get kinda cold (and of course, snowy) in the winter so boots, skinny jeans and classy coats were the main highlights.

Also, cocktail dresses were showcased, just in time for many Christmas and New Years parties. Local boutique owners were on hand to describe the pieces they had chosen. The best part of this fashion show is that all the pieces were very down-to-earth and realistic for almost anyone.
Of course, some trends emerged from the show. A great casual outfit for winter 2010 is some skinnies or cargoes paired with a sweater. You can dress it down with suede boots (this look works great if you have to do a lot of walking outside) or make it work for a night out with a great pair of heels.
Don't think that VOA was only for the well-heeled--a cabana for eight cost $2500, while general admission tix went for only $40. So it really involved the whole fashion-obsessed community, as well as those who are curious about what fashion shows are really about. Hopefully, I can go sometime in the future!

The Perfect Gift for the College Student

This will be my first Christmas as a college co-ed and I'm excited for finals week to be over (not to mention the stressful cramming weekend before) so I can go home and start celebrating the holidays. I've been so busy finishing up classes, filling out professor surveys and studying (of course!) that I haven't had much time to think about Christmas. And it's in two weeks! I'm sure it will be a relaxing month, though, which is probably the best gift a college student can ask for.
Besides some time for R&R, here are a few gift ideas for the college student in your life.

Gift cards: You can't go wrong with a gift card (or money). Make sure you ask them beforehand where they like to shop so you'll know they'll actually use the card. Oh, and a gift card to a restaurants is always great, too--college students usually live pretty cheaply and a night out is always appreciated.
Practical (but cute) shoes: College campuses are usually pretty big and most people have to trek across it to get to classes, the library, etc. Invest in a nice pair of boots (preferably waterproof, or sprayed with waterproofer) that are stylish, too, such as Bearpaws. They look similar to Uggs, but are a fraction of the price and hold up just as well!
Underwear (and other essentials): Who doesn't procrastinate on laundry every once in a while? It's nice to have plenty of stuff to go around so you're not a slave to the washing machine every weekend. Gilly Hicks has a great selection, with all kinds of colors and styles so you can't go wrong.

Winter accessories: So not every student lives where it's snowy and cold, but if you know someone who does, chances are they could use a scarf, hat and gloves. Buy them a cute set that'll go with anything (or match it specifically to a certain coat, if you know what they have) and keep them warm on the way to class.

I have never been a huge fan of watches--if I need to know the time, I'll just check my cell phone or a nearby clock. But I've come to realize that watches, while being practical, can also function as jewelry.

I prefer an analog watch to a digital one because I think analog ones look more polished. One of my favorites is AE's White Watch ($24.50). The sleek design will go with anything, and the color will pop against bright-colored shirts.
If you do like digital watches better (I have to admit, they usually have cool extras that analogs don't have), try one that doesn't look like you borrowed it from your dad!
